How to Read Your Chinese Health Checkup Report: A Guide for Foreigners
Got a health checkup in China and received a report you can't read? Here's how Chinese medical reports are structured, what the key terms mean, and when to seek a professional translation.
You did the smart thing: you got a comprehensive health screening while in China, at a fraction of what it would cost at home. Then the report arrived — twenty pages, entirely in Chinese.
This guide walks you through how these reports are structured, so you can at least find your way around before deciding whether you need a professional interpretation.
How Chinese checkup reports are organized
Most reports from major hospitals and checkup centers follow the same structure:
- 总检报告 (Summary report) — the physician's overall conclusions, usually on the first pages. This is the most important section: it lists findings in order of significance and gives follow-up recommendations.
- 异常结果汇总 (Abnormal findings summary) — a consolidated list of everything outside reference ranges.
- Department-by-department results — lab work (检验), imaging (超声/CT/DR), internal medicine (内科), and so on.
Key terms worth knowing
A few recurring words carry most of the meaning:
- 正常 / 未见异常 — normal / no abnormality found. What you want to see.
- 偏高 / 偏低 — slightly high / slightly low. Usually flagged with ↑ or ↓ next to the value.
- 建议复查 — "recommend re-examination." Not an emergency; it means re-test in a few months.
- 建议进一步检查 — "recommend further examination." Take this one seriously — it means the finding needs specialist follow-up.
- 结节 (nodule) — common in thyroid and lung findings. Most are benign, but grading matters; this is where machine translation gets dangerous.
Why machine translation isn't enough
Translation apps handle everyday Chinese well, but medical reports fail them in specific ways: reference ranges differ from Western labs, abbreviations are hospital-specific, and nuance like 建议复查 versus 建议进一步检查 — a big difference in urgency — often collapses into the same English sentence.
For anything abnormal, have the report interpreted by someone with medical Chinese — ideally alongside your home physician.
